JAMES HSIOUNG LEE SCIENCE BUILDING

The James Hsioung Lee Science Building (厲樹雄科學館) was opened on February 11, 1982. It was named in honor of Mr James Lee (厲樹雄) in recognition of his generous support for urban studies at the University.

At the opening ceremony, Mr Lee, then ninety years old, wore his signature orchid boutonnière. In his speech, he shared his lifelong passion for education, emphasising the vital importance of nurturing a new generation of graduates equipped with the skills necessary for Hong Kong’s continued prosperity and development.

The James Hsioung Lee Science Building was unveiled as part of the campus redevelopment plan initiated in 1976. Originally, it housed the first-year Chemistry laboratory and the Electronic Services Unit. The Chemistry laboratory was specifically designed to cultivate future scientists by introducing them to scientific observation and investigation.

Today, the building serves as the headquarters for the Department of Earth Sciences, its affiliated units, and the Stephen Hui Geological Museum, which proudly remains Hong Kong’s first and only geological museum.
