CHI WAH
LEARNING COMMONS

CHI WAH
LEARNING COMMONS

Generously gifted by our Science alumnus Dr Colin Lam (林高演), the Chi Wah Learning Commons (智華館) has redefined the traditional approach to teaching and learning.

Recognised by the University Grants Committee of Hong Kong as a pioneering model among our sister institutions, this 6,000-square-meter Learning Commons on the Centennial Campus serves as a vibrant hub for collaboration. Featuring discussion rooms, cozy lounging areas, and individual workstations, it nurtures the exchange of ideas in today’s blended learning environment.

Visitors to the Chinese chamber within the Learning Commons will notice a pair of elegant couplets inscribed by Dr Lam himself. They beautifully highlight the characters “智 (Chi)” and “華 (Wah),” beginning each line:
“智啟神州作育英才宏道基
華滿儒林春風化雨百煉金”

Dr Lam shared his aspiration behind naming the Learning Commons “Chi Wah”. “智 (Chi)” stands for wisdom — a symbol of the educational journey that ensures the gift of knowledge is passed from one generation to the next. “Wah” reflects our Chinese roots, representing a blossoming of talents nurtured by the gentle spring breeze and rain.

The couplets echo a profound love for Chinese culture, our University, our students, and our community.
