Kadoorie Family
The family name “Kadoorie” holds significant recognition in Hong Kong, with numerous initiatives and landmarks honoring their enduring legacy. Among these are the Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden, the Kadoorie Agricultural Aid Association, Kadoorie Avenue, Kadoorie Hill, and Kadoorie Beach — each a testament to the family’s longstanding contributions to the city’s growth and development.
Renowned for their generous philanthropy, the Kadoorie family has actively supported a wide array of charitable endeavors both locally and internationally, including their ongoing commitment to HKU. Notably, four family members have been honored with honorary doctorate degrees from HKU—Lord Lawrence Kadoorie (1961), Dr Horace Kadoorie (1981), Lady Kadoorie (1999), and Sir Michael Kadoorie (2004) — in recognition of their remarkable philanthropic efforts.
In continuation of this noble legacy, Sir Michael Kadoorie has dedicated a decade of his time and expertise to serving on the University’s Council, providing invaluable guidance and counsel to foster HKU’s continued growth and development.

KADOORIE BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES BUILDING
The Kadoorie Biological Sciences Building (嘉道理生物科學大樓) stands as a beautiful tribute, dedicated by Lady Kadoorie in loving memory of her late husband, Lord Lawrence Kadoorie — a steadfast supporter of the University and a long-serving member of the Council.
Opened on January 17, 2000, this thoughtfully designed facility serves as a vibrant hub for the biological sciences — spanning Zoology, Botany, Ecology, and Biodiversity, and offers cutting-edge facilities for the Institute of Molecular Biology.
In addition to the Biological Sciences Building, another facility bearing the Kadoorie name is the Kadoorie Centre (formerly known as the Kadoorie Agricultural Research Centre), located in Shek Kong of New Territories. Established in June 1986 with generous support from the Kadoorie brothers — Lord Lawrence Kadoorie and his younger brother, Sir Horace Kadoorie — the Centre has served as a vital site for research in environmental science, agriculture, horticulture, and nature conservation.
These gifts are more than mere structures; they reflect the deep generosity and unwavering dedication of the Kadoorie family to fostering sustainable development and protecting our environment.
