Fong Family
The enduring bond between the Fong family and the University has been deeply rooted across three generations, with the family unwavering in their support for the University's growth since the 1980s.
Dr Henry Fong Yun Wah (Honorary University Fellow, 2006), whose own schooling was interrupted by the Sino-Japanese War, was particularly committed to helping others realise their potential through education. Continuing his family's noble tradition of philanthropy, he has established numerous schools across Mainland China, and his family's Foundations have generously supported tertiary institutions in Hong Kong. HKU has long been a grateful recipient of the Fong family's unwavering support. Following in his father's footsteps, Dr Fong has contributed generously to the University's research endeavors, actively engaged in its activities, and offered his wise counsel with grace and humility.
Representing the third generation of this remarkable family, Mr David Fong Man Hung (Honorary University Fellow, 2023) carries forward the Fong family's philanthropic legacy with heartfelt dedication. At HKU, Mr Fong has provided invaluable guidance in various capacities, including service on the University Court and the Board of Directors of the HKU Foundation. He has also played a vital role in nurturing the University's entrepreneurial spirit, notably through his support of the "DreamCatchers" programme.

FONG SHU CHUEN AMENITIES CENTRE
FONG SHU CHUEN AMENITIES CENTRE
The Fong Shu Chuen Amenities Centre (方樹泉文娛中心), a gift from Mr Fong Shu Chuen (方樹泉) and the Fong Shu Fook Tong Foundation, was officially opened on September 25, 1981.
During the opening ceremony, Sir Albert Rodrigues (羅理基爵士), the then HKU Pro-Chancellor, emphasised the importance of the centre. He acknowledged that many students, coming from diverse backgrounds, faced long journeys to campus and often returned to homes lacking suitable environments for study. Sir Albert highlighted the vital role of recreational facilities and opportunities for social connection in enriching students' university experiences. He believed that the Fong Shu Chuen Amenities Centre would serve as a meaningful space to support students’ non-academic needs, making their university years more rewarding and memorable.
Dr Henry Fong Yun Wah (方潤華), the son of Mr Fong Shu Chuen, also shared his aspirations during the opening ceremony. He envisioned the Amenities Centre as a space for students to forge meaningful connections and broaden their horizons.
Over the years, Fong Shu Chuen Amenities Centre has become a cherished space where students gather for study, relaxation, and recreation.
