The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the Phoenix Yuen Foundation Fund Limited (the Foundation) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marking a significant step forward in their shared commitment to advancing education and student development.

The signing ceremony was officiated by Professor Xiang Zhang, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKU, together with Dr Peter Yuen, Founder of the Phoenix Yuen Foundation Fund Limited. Also in attendance were Dr Joseph Yuen, Mr Simon Ho and Mr Chris Pang of the Foundation; Professor Yang Wang, Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Institutional Advancement); and Professor Sophia Chan, Master of Residential College One of HKU.

Professor Xiang Zhang, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKU, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Phoenix Yuen Foundation Fund Limited.

At the ceremony, Professor Zhang expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Foundation for its generosity. He remarked that the excellence of a university is best measured by the lasting societal impact of its graduates over time. The donation, he noted, reflects the shared values of dedication to education and the arts, and will further strengthen HKU’s mission to nurture creative, compassionate, and globally minded leaders. Professor Zhang also looked forward to deepening collaboration between HKU and the Foundation to create a positive impact in Hong Kong and the Mainland.

The Foundation’s support pays tribute to the legacy of the late Mrs Yuen Pang Fung Kwan Phoenix, whose life and work embodied the integration of artistic creativity and educational excellence. Mrs Yuen was a graduate of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (Drama) (1991) and holder of a Bachelor of Education degree from HKU (2005). Her passion for the arts and education inspired her husband, Dr Peter Yuen — an HKU alumnus (BSc(Eng)-Ind 1982, MBA 1992) — to establish the Phoenix Yuen Foundation Fund Limited, extending his wife’s vision to future generations.

Dr Yuen said, “If we wish to advance education further, the most natural place to start is our alma mater. This donation is not only a vote of confidence in HKU, but also an expression of our hopes for generations of teachers and students to come. We wish for students with potential to access greater opportunities and for HKU to continue connecting Hong Kong and the Mainland, and bridging knowledge with the arts.”

This remarkable gift reaffirms the Phoenix Yuen Foundation Fund Limited’s commitment to supporting higher education and the arts, and to inspiring future generations through the spirit and legacy of the late Mrs Phoenix Yuen.
