Dr the Honourable Lee Shau Kee
Dr the Honourable Lee Shau Kee, GBM, affectionately known as “Uncle Four” to Hongkongers, was a steadfast supporter of the University. Throughout his illustrious life, his unwavering benevolence profoundly enriched the University community.
Like a diligent sower scattering seeds that flourish, Dr Lee’s support was vital to many aspects of the University’s growth and development. From the state-of-the-art “Lee Shau Kee Lecture Centre and Grand Hall” on the Centennial Campus to the culturally vibrant “Lee Shau Kee Hall” on Pokfulam Road, which accommodates up to 300 students each year, as well as the provision of comprehensive scholarship schemes and unwavering backing of HKU’s pioneering research initiatives — each of his gifts reflected his passionate belief in education and his dedication to nurturing future generations.
In recognition of his exemplary service to education and his significant contributions to Hong Kong’s economic development and prosperity, he was conferred the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws in 1998.
Dr Lee’s enduring legacy, like seeds sown on fertile ground, will continue to grow and to inspire generations of HKUers to come.

Following the inauguration of the Centennial Campus in 2012, a new landmark was born — the Lee Shau Kee Lecture Centre and the Grand Hall. These extraordinary spaces have swiftly became a symbol of the HKU community, serving as cherished venues for joyful inauguration ceremonies welcoming new students and heartfelt farewells to our graduating classes. The gift, was made possible through the generous support of Dr Lee Shau Kee (李兆基).
At the Dedication Ceremony held in January 2013, Dr Lee warmly shared his reflections on wealth and philanthropic works, highlighting the profound importance of giving back to society. He eloquently expressed, “There is a time to create wealth, and a time to make use of your wealth. The best way to share the fruits of your work is charity and philanthropy, saving and improving millions of lives.”
Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and thoughtfully designed acoustics, the Grand Hall seamlessly hosts a diverse range of activities — from enlightening lectures and stirring concerts to captivating film premieres and vibrant cultural performances.
The Lee Shau Kee Lecture Centre has profoundly enriched not only the educational landscape of HKU but also its cultural scene, where many memories will be shaped.
