The University of Hong Kong, the city’s first institution of higher learning, began its journey with the laying of its foundation stone on March 16, 1910. Just two years later, in 1912, it welcomed its first cohort of students, marking the beginning of a legacy that has shaped generations.

For over a century, the Main Building has stood as a quiet witness to HKU’s story. It has embraced the footsteps of students rushing to lectures, echoed the voices of scholars and global leaders, and served as a sanctuary during times of conflict. Within its walls, memories have been made, ideas have flourished, and lives have been transformed. It is more than a building—it is the soul of the University.

It has also borne witness to the dynamic growth of Hong Kong itself, standing in parallel with the city’s transformation and resilience through changing times.

The passage of time, however, has left its mark. The stone steps and floor tiles that once bore the footsteps of generations, and the bricks and classrooms that withstood the trials of war, now whisper of a rich and resilient past. Today, the call for thoughtful restoration - to preserve their historic integrity and ensure they continue to welcome and inspire future generations.

Alumni, students, staff, and supporters of HKU are cordially invited to contribute to the HKU Heritage Fund campaign. Your contribution will help safeguard this iconic landmark, honour our shared heritage, and inspire generations to come.

Together, we build the legacy for the future.
