Dato' Dr Cheng Yu-Tung and Cheng Family

Dato' Dr Cheng Yu-Tung, GBM, was a pioneering entrepreneur whose vision and unwavering dedication have left an indelible mark — not only in the remarkable evolution of Hong Kong, but also in the flourishing of the University.

Since the founding of the HKU Foundation for Educational Development and Research in 1995, Dr Cheng graciously served as its Founding Honorary Patron. Recognising the importance of educational infrastructure, the Cheng family made an extremely generous gift to support the development of the University’s Centennial Campus. With equal dedication to nurturing minds, the Cheng family also extended their generosity to support fellowships, visiting professorships, and endowed professorships. These initiatives have fostered invaluable exchanges of clinical expertise between Hong Kong and the Mainland, brought distinguished legal scholars to HKU for pioneering interdisciplinary research in areas such as surrogacy and law and technology, and inspired pioneering advances in finance theory.

CHENG YU TUNG TOWER

In 2012, the Cheng Yu Tung Tower (鄭裕彤教學樓) rose on the Centennial Campus, marking a significant milestone for the Faculty of Law, which had humble beginnings on Caine Road in 1969. Designed to foster collaboration and promote interactive learning, the Tower is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including a Moot Court, dedicated study spaces, and welcoming common rooms for students—spaces where ideas can flourish and connections can be forged.

This new home for the Faculty of Law was made possible through the generous support of Dato' Dr Cheng Yu Tung (鄭裕彤) and the Cheng family through the Chow Tai Fook Charity Foundation. Over the years, their unwavering contributions have profoundly impacted campus development, research initiatives, and exchange programmes.

During the dedication ceremony, Dr Henry Cheng Kar-Shun (鄭家純), Honorary Chairman of the Chow Tai Fook Charity Foundation, remarked: “Our family attaches great importance to the Faculty. We sincerely hope that with this new development, the Faculty can help further advance the concept of rule of law and contribute to the prosperity of both Hong Kong and the Mainland.”

This remarkable gift signifies the Cheng family’s abiding commitment to the education of the future guardians of justice and the rule of law, as well as a vote of confidence in the Faculty.
