HAKING WONG BUILDING

HAKING WONG BUILDING

Haking Wong Building (黃克競樓), opened on October 6, 1983, marked a significant milestone in the University’s history by uniting the four departments of the Faculty of Engineering under one harmonious roof—a space where innovation, collaboration, and aspiration thrive side by side. Named in honor of Dr Haking Wong (黃克競), whose profound generosity and unwavering support embody the true spirit of giving back, the building stands as a testament to his heartfelt words “to give back to the community what I have gained from the community” (in Chinese: 取諸社會 用諸社會).

Prior to the opening of Haking Wong Building, the departments — Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering (now Data and Systems Engineering), and Electrical Engineering (now Electrical and Electronic Engineering) — were scattered along Pokfulam Road, nestled within facilities such as the Peel Engineering Laboratory, Duncan Sloss Building, and Ho Tung Engineering Workshop. The consolidation of these departments into a single, purpose-built building symbolised a new era of teaching, learning and research.

Today, Haking Wong Building remains the heart of the Faculty of Engineering—a dynamic sanctuary where future leaders are nurtured and dreams take flight. This ten-story building houses most of the engineering’s departments, featuring over 45 laboratories, academic and administrative offices, and a canteen on the podium level serving the university community.
