GRADUATE HOUSE
GRADUATE HOUSE
Tucked into the gentle slope of HKU’s campus stands a building that’s more than just bricks and mortar — the Graduate House (研究生堂), a thoughtfully designed hub that brings together living, learning, and community under one roof.
Completed in March 1998, the building was designed by Mr Rocco Yim, a renowned architect and HKU architecture alumnus. With an eye for harmony and a heart for nature, Yim shaped the Graduate House to blend seamlessly into the hillside, wrapping it in greenery and inviting the outdoors in. The result was so striking that it earned the Silver Medal from the Hong Kong Institute of Architects.
Inside, the Graduate House unfolds into four distinct yet interconnected spaces. At its heart is the Jockey Club Building (賽馬會樓), a dormitory for full-time postgraduate students. Thanks to the generous support of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, this residence offers 188 single rooms and 9 double rooms — each a quiet retreat for study and rest. Every other floor features a student lounge and pantry, perfect for late-night chats or shared meals.
Beyond the dormitory, the building opens up to the Wang Gungwu Lecture Hall (王賡武講堂), a space where minds gather and ideas spark. It also houses an amenity centre that serves the entire student body — a place to unwind, recharge, and feel part of something larger.
