July 2006
1981 was declared the International Year of Disabled Persons (IYDP) by The United Nations and it became a milestone in the lives of millions of people with a disability over the world. To commemorate this significant year, the Class of ’81 choose to create a fund to support equal opportunity for people with a disability as part of its Silver Jubilee Reunion Programme.
The Class of ’81 Inclusion Fund connects the University with the community, connects graduates with current HKU students, and connects the Class members’ life experiences to that of those whose lives may have changed since 1981. The Fund promotes equal opportunity and social inclusion in Hong Kong and the Mainland through programmes organised by and/or for students of the University.
Fundraising activities have included Golf Day, a Walkathon (from the Peak to HKU campus) and a Reunion Dinner at HKU’s Loke Yew Hall.
In response to the appeal, Mr Henry Chan made a donation of $1 million to The University of Hong Kong to be used to promote inclusive education for people with a disability. In recognition of the generosity of Mr Chan, a fund was set up entitled Henry Chan Inclusive Education Fund.
