The “Urban Climb 300M+” Challenge, a charity climb by paraplegic rock climber Lai Chi Wai, Ignite Community Services, raised more than HK$ 7.7 million for the HKU “Get up and Walk” Campaign, thanks to the generous support of the general public and a dollar-for-dollar matching donation by Chinachem Group.
The funds raised will support the HKU Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology’s pioneering work in developing exoskeletons that can help paraplegics regain mobility, as well as other clinical services and research work to support the rehabilitation of patients with spinal cord injuries.
In January 2021, Lai Chi Wai scaled Chinachem Group’s 300-metre Nina Tower by hauling himself up only using his body’ strength, making him the world’s first para-athlete to climb a skyscraper. His courageous and bold attempt encouraged Hong Kong people and people with disabilities, to “Live your dream. Never settle”.

The High Angle Rescue Team of our trusted Hong Kong Fire Services Department ensured the safety of the climb. We were honoured to have alumnus Patrick Cheng (BA 1990, MPA 2002), Commandant of the Fire and Ambulance Services Academy, to take us behind the scenes to explain the challenges and exciting aspects of the event.
