HKU takes priority in nurturing students as global citizens and providing international education opportunities. The University has been fortunate to have many generous supporters who share the same vision. Amongst them is Professor Francis Lau who has recently established a scholarship to provide travel grants to Medical students for overseas learning activities.
The “Francis Lau Scholarships for Medical Students” will be awarded to 10 students each year at a value of $20,000 per award. The awards will be based on academic merit, while financial needs will also be taken into consideration. Medical students can engage in learning activities such as overseas clinical attachments and community services under the Special Study Modules of the 5-year curriculum and under Elective of the 6-year curriculum.
Michael Chan (MBBS, Year 5) is one of the founding members of Vision of Inspiration and Child Empowerment (VOICE), a Hong Kong non-governmental organisation founded by 11 medical and dental students. He finds he benefits a lot from service trips. “It is important for us to have a heart to serve. During the service trips we learn to communicate with the patients and understand their needs better,” said Michael. He also found the new scholarships very encouraging as it opens up more opportunities for Medical students.
More than 40 students joined the service trip to Luoding,China assisting over 50 families and 600 villagers through health counselling and simple health screening.
