Empowering the First Generation and Shaping Futures

Since its inception in 2008, the HKU First-in-the-Family Education (FIFE) Fund has been offering financial assistance to students who are the first generation in their families to attend university and have financial constraints, to participate in experiential learning activities.

Alumnus Mr Keith Shing (BFin 2012) shared the impact of the FIFE Fund on his personal journey at the Fund’s Reception Gathering. Keith made use of the fund for a study trip to New York. This eye-opening academic exchange ascertained him that even though his goal may seem to be out of reach, he can make it achievable by his determination and efforts. This mindset has been crucial in helping him catch his dream of becoming a pilot.

Another past recipient of the FIFE Fund, Ms Judy Ng (BA 2024) utilised the fund for a volunteering experience in Japan. This experience not only enhanced her Japanese language skills as a Japanese Studies student but also allowed her to engage with the local communities there, including villagers and town councillors. With the Fund’s support, Judy also participated in the 48th Boston University Conference on Language Development, contributing as a co-author to a research project focusing on autistic language learning and enriched her academic profile.

Mr David Wong, Chairman of the FIFE Fund Steering Committee encouraged the recipients to pay it forward after graduation, creating opportunities for the next generation.
