A special screening of the film “The Way We Talk” 《看我今天怎麼說》, presented by the HKU Foundation, was held on February 21, 2025. With the generous support from Foundation members, alumni, and friends, the screening raised $569,100 in support of inclusive education as of March 6, 2025.
The film, supported by the Lee Hysan Foundation and produced by One Cool Film Production Limited, garnered seven nominations at the 43rd Hong Kong Film Awards and won Best Leading Actress at the Golden Horse Awards in 2024, with Chung Suet-ying taking the honour.
One of the three main cast members, Marco Ng (吳祉昊) is currently an undergraduate student in his final year studying Information Management at HKU. He is the only deaf and amateur actor in the play, and his sincere performance impressed many audiences that night.
"Many deaf schools can be found in Hong Kong, but deaf students can also enter mainstream schools where they can learn through sign language or any other form of assistance, which is very important. The spectrum of deaf individuals is wide, with some needing only a small amount of support, while others, like Wolf, require sign language to express themselves. It is hoped that more schools in society will provide sign language to give deaf students the option to learn in a way that suits them." - Shared by Marco after the screening.
HKU stands out as the only university in Hong Kong to provide sign language services, further emphasising its commitment to accessibility and inclusivity for all students. The success of the special screening event not only raised crucial funds but also raised awareness and sparked meaningful conversations about the value of inclusivity and diversity in education. It underscored the commitment of the HKU community to create a more inclusive and equitable learning environment for all students, regardless of their backgrounds or abilities.
