The first cohort of Y S and Christabel Lung Scholars has been announced

Jan 2010

In the first year of the Y S and Christabel Lung Scholarships, a total of 28 students have been awarded scholarships to support their studies. Of the recipients, three undergraduate and three postgraduate students are from the Engineering Faculty, and ten undergraduate and twelve postgraduate students are from the Medical Faculty.

In 2004, the late Madame Christabel Chu Tsuk-Lim donated a bequest to The University of Hong Kong in memory of her husband, the late Professor Y S Lung and herself.

The bequest was used to create a perpetual endowment fund which supports the “Y S and Christabel Lung Scholarships” 龍榮軾教授及朱淑濂女士獎學金, named in memory of the couple. The scholarships are awarded annually to outstanding undergraduate and postgraduate students in the Engineering and Medical Faculties at HKU.

These two faculties held a very special meaning for the couple. Madame Christabel Chu was a medical student at HKU in 1940 but had to give up her studies due to the war. Although her dreams of entering the medical field were denied her, Madame Chu’s creative talents lead to change of career and she became a successful fashion designer with her own evening gown shop. At a time when the city was growing and expanding, Professor YS Lung guided generations of young engineers as a professor with HKU’s Mechanical Engineering Department until his retirement as Reader in 1972.
