Dr Li Dak Sum, a renowned businessman and philanthropist, donated three leadership gifts totalling HK$300 million to The University of Hong Kong (HKU), The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) for the establishment of scholarship schemes that nurture young talents.
Each HK$100 million gift shall be used to set up a “Li Dak Sum Yip Yio Chin Kenneth Li Scholarship” at the three universities through a scholarship endowment named after Dr Li, Dr Li’s wife and his grandson. The Scholarship shall support outstanding local students who are graduates of Ning Po College or Ning Po No. 2 College. These two secondary schools are dear to Dr Li’s heart as they were established by the Ning Po Residents Association, of which Dr Li is the Founding Chairman.
“Education is the foundation of a strong country”, that is Dr Li’s belief and therefore over the years he has been devoted to helping young people to achieve their full potential by supporting education in Hong Kong and Mainland China. Dr Li said, “I am pleased to collaborate with the three top-notch universities in Hong Kong. I am confident that the three universities will continue to nurture future leaders.”
Professor Peter Mathieson thanked Dr Li sincerely for this wonderful leadership gift. “We applaud Dr Li’s long-term vision of supporting education. It is with this support that HKU continues to thrive and contribute to the advancement of education for the betterment of society.”
The scholarships will be launched at the three universities in the academic year 2016-17. Each year a total of up to 51 students from the three universities will benefit from the scheme.
