June 2022

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is pleased to announce that, in recognition of the generous support of the Philip K.H. Wong Foundation and the Wong family throughout the years, the Faculty of Law’s Centre for Chinese Law will be named the “Philip KH Wong Centre for Chinese Law (黃乾亨中國法研究中心) ”, and a 300-seat lecture theatre the “Philip KH Wong Theatre (黃乾亨講堂)”.

The University is grateful to the Foundation for a HK$100 million donation to support the Faculty of Law and university developments.

Dr Philip K.H. Wong (1932-2020) is fondly remembered as an architect of HKU’s traditions. He was an exemplary alumnus and had been a long-term benefactor to various initiatives of the University for three decades. Dr Wong was instrumental in establishing the HKU Foundation for Educational Development and Research in 1995 and was its Chairman in 2003 for a decade. An ardent believer in education, he endowed three Professorships and numerous scholarships at his alma mater. Revered as a distinguished member of the legal profession, he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1955 and an HonLLD in 1996 from HKU.

Professor Hualing Fu, Dean of Law, is grateful to the Foundation for its continuing support of the Faculty. “The study of Chinese Law at the Faculty will doubtless gather further momentum as Hong Kong embraces the synergies for growing legal collaborations and integration across the Greater Bay Area. This generous donation will provide stable support for the Centre’s future research activities and, through the collective efforts of our colleagues, it will cement our role as a leading centre of academic excellence for pioneering research on China-focused legal issues,” he said.

The Faculty is planning academic activities in the fall to celebrate the generous gift and the naming of the theatre and the Centre.
