Cherishing the Bonds of Brotherhood by Paying It Forward

June 2016

A scholarship designated for students residing in HKU Ricci Hall was made possible by Riccian Mr David Lu (BSc(Eng) 1968) and Mr Nelson Lu (BSc(Eng) 1970), who wish to honour their late mother Mrs Lu Chan Miu Han through this meaningful gift.

Coming from a modest background, David has always been grateful to his mother, a diligent and perseverant woman who supported the family by working as a garment factory worker.

With his mother’s tactful upbringing and encouragement, and after serving as an apprentice with the Government and simultaneously studying part-time at the Hong Kong Technical College, David managed to gain admission to HKU and became a chartered engineer after graduation. Throughout his study days, David felt indebted to his alma mater and Ricci Hall which gave him generous support and inspirations.

Mr and Mrs Lu came from Guangzhou and the family lived in a rooftop wooden hut in Shamshuipo in the 1950s. In 1967, David was awarded a scholarship from the Junior Chamber International Hong Kong for his outstanding academic performance. The news was published on the South China Morning Post.

The first batch of awardees of this scholarship was undergraduates Angus Chan and Wong Wang-Hei. Angus is Chairman of the Ricci Hall Students Association and majors in Psychology, and Wang-Hei studies Engineering and is the captain of the University’s handball team. Both of them are inspired by David and aspire to support their “younger brothers” at Ricci Hall in future.
