For nearly a century, HKU has been the cradle of some of the greatest creative and artistic minds in the region. And the University continues to contribute to the arts and humanities culture of Hong Kong with the help of the “Hung Leung Hau Ling Distinguished Fellow in Humanities” scheme.
Established in 2008 with a HK$15 million donation from Hung Hing Ying and Leung Hau Ling Charitable Foundation, the scheme supports the appointments of visiting distinguished scholars in the humanities.
The first incumbent of this scheme, Professor Lung Ying-tai, completed a new book, The Untold Stories of 1949, during her residence at the University. At a public lecture held in Loke Yew Hall in September, she shared how she was able to reveal a forgotten part of China’s history and bring it to a multi-generational audience on the Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan, as well as other Chinese-speaking societies.
