The Lam family
Oct 2022
Born in China, the late Mr Lam King Cheong and late Mrs Lam Au Siu Lau came to Hong Kong to seek better opportunities. Although they did not receive much of an education in childhood, as adults they used any scrap of spare time to teach themselves how to read and write and enrich themselves with knowledge across a range of topics.
The couple worked together in a factory, with Mr Lam handling the technical and logistical side of things and Mrs Lam working on administrative issues. Against the odds, they were able to start their own manufacturing business making car seat cushions and steering wheel covers. Lam family found some export markets including the Middle East and Australia. Wealth was accumulated from diligence and devotion towards others.
They understood how education can transform lives and thus supported their eight children to excel in their studies, including when they studied at university overseas. The Lams also encouraged their children to explore their own interests and unleash their potential. Mr and Mrs Lam’s beliefs influenced their children to help students who show the same potential. Upholding the Lam family virtue, the siblings established the “Lam King Cheong Au Siu Lau Memorial Scholarship (林境昌區少榴伉儷紀念獎學金)” in memory of their loving parents. The family believes that, with scholarships, more students can benefit from education and find the courage to chase their academic dreams.
