Inauguration of the HKU Jockey Club Student Village III

Feb 2015

An inauguration ceremony for the four residential colleges at the Jockey Club Student Village III (賽馬會第三學生村): Shun Hing College (信興學院); Chi Sun College (志新學院); Lap-Chee College (立之學院); and New College (日新學院), was held on February 7, 2015.

The four residential colleges at Kennedy Town were made possible by donations totalling HK$450 million in support of University developments. They represent the shared values and educational goals of the University and its benefactors. These four residential colleges, providing a total of 1,800 hostel places, are a welcome addition to the other 15 residential halls, colleges and residences.

The Village was named after the Hong Kong Jockey Club in recognition of a HK$108.25 million donation from the Club’s Charities Trust. The University is most grateful to the Club’s Charities Trust for having established the first, second and now the third student village at HKU.

Shun Hing College was established by the Shun Hing Education and Charity Fund, a long-term partner of HKU for over three decades.

Chi Sun College is supported by Simatelex Charitable Foundation. The Foundation also established Suen Chi Sun Hall ten years ago.

New College is named in recognition of a generous gift from the Tung Foundation.

The naming of Lap-Chee College, in honour of the immediate past Vice-Chancellor Professor Lap-Chee Tsui, was proposed by a group of alumni and friends, who wish to honour Professor Tsui while also making a donation to support university developments. It is a gift from Dr Patrick Poon, Kerry Holdings Limited, Azalea (1972) Endowment Fund, alumni and friends, as well as the family of the late Mr Yao Ling-Sun.

Home to 1,800 students from Hong Kong, the Mainland and overseas, the Colleges are intellectually and culturally diversified learning communities, with a balanced mix of undergraduates and postgraduates. Students have a strong sense of identity and there is an emphasis on contributing to society. Each Residential College has its own mission, motto and character, and its members will enjoy life-long bonds after graduation.
