Philip K H Wong Wilson K L Wong Professorship in Electrical Engineering

Professor Huang Kaibin completed his undergraduate and master's studies at the National University of Singapore, and obtained a PhD from The University of Texas at Austin. After spending several years as a faculty member at Yonsei University in South Korea and Hong Kong Polytechnic University, he joined The University of Hong Kong (HKU) as an Assistant Professor in 2014. At HKU, he advanced through the academic ranks to become a Full Professor in 2022, the Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 2024, and the Philip K H Wong Wilson K L Wong Professor in 2025.

Professor Huang's research interests focus on mobile communication technologies. He has contributed enabling technologies to the 4G, 5G, and 6G mobile networks. His inventions in multi-antenna (MIMO) communications, wirelessly powered communication, mobile edge computing, and edge AI have been widely embraced by both academia and leading ICT companies, including Huawei, Apple, and LG Electronics. As a notable example, US Patent 7,702,029, representing a breakthrough in MIMO precoding feedback compression, has been adopted in the 4G and 5G mobile standards and become the prior art for 243 other patents. In the March-April 2013 issue of Intellectual Asset Management Magazine, this patent was recognised as one of the top five patents owned by Apple. Overall, his cluster of patents on 4G and 5G technologies has inspired extensive follow-up technology development by companies including LG, Qualcomm, Nokia, Samsung, and Broadcom.

In recognition of his pioneering work on MIMO communications and wirelessly powered communications, Professor Huang was elevated to a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a distinction given by the world's largest technical professional organisation to members with extraordinary accomplishments. In 2024, he was elected as a Fellow of the United States National Academy of Inventors. This is the highest professional distinction accorded to academic inventors who have demonstrated a prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development, and the welfare of society.

Professor Huang's work spearheads advancements in wireless technologies and has inspired extensive follow-up research. For this reason, he has been named a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate for the past six consecutive years, placing him within the top 0.1% of scientists globally. His innovative work has received six Best Paper awards from the IEEE Communications Society. Most recently, Professor Huang has focused his research efforts on the emerging area of edge intelligence to enable AI applications. His pioneering work in this field led to him being named an AI 2000 Most Influential Scholar in 2023-2024, where he was ranked among the top 30 in the field of Internet of Things (IoT).
