Modern Dental Group Professorship in Clinical Dental Science
Professor Jin is the Dean, Head of the Institute for Advanced Dentistry, Modern Dental Group Professor in Clinical Dental Science and Chair Professor of Periodontology at HKU Faculty of Dentistry. He joined HKU in 1994 and served as the Associate Deans (Mainland & Global Affairs, 2006-2010; and Research, Innovation & Enterprise, 2011-2015). He was honoured with the prestigious Fellowship in Dental Surgery ad hominem by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (2007), and the Honorary Fellowship by the College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong (2025).
His main leadership services to the two leading organizations in dentistry, including the Councillor of FDI World Dental Federation (Geneva, Switzerland, 2015-2021), Chair of FDI Global Periodontal Health Project Task Team (2016-2021), FDI Science Committee Chairman (2012-2015); and Member of IADR Board of Directors (Alexandria, USA, 2018-2021), IADR-Asia Pacific Region President (2019.12-2020), Chair of IADR-Task Group in Periodontal Disease - Global Oral Health Inequalities Research Agenda (2009-2012).
In addition, he was the Asian Pacific Society of Periodontology (APSP) President (2011-2013); Honorary Council Member of Chinese Stomatological Association (2008-2021); Council Member of Hong Kong Dental Association (1997-1999); and Founding Member of CDSHK Specialty Board in Periodontology (2001-2017). Currently, he is a Board Member of International Academy of Periodontology (2012-), Honorary Advisor of APSP (2017-), Vice-Chairman of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Oral Health Alliance (2018-), and Honorary Advisor of Hong Kong Society of Periodontology & Implant Dentistry (2009-). He sits on the editorial boards of the major journals in periodontology/dentistry - J Clin Periodontol (2011-) and J Periodont Res (2007-), and previously J Periodontol (2006-2023) and JDR (2010-2015).
His research fields cover molecular mechanisms of periodontal pathogenesis, periodontal medicine, nanotechnology for novel oral/periodontal healthcare, and global periodontal health strategies and approaches. He as a PI has received 10 GRF grants from the Hong Kong Research Grants Council, and a major grant via the Shenzhen/Hong Kong Innovation Circle Program. He has primarily supervised research projects for over 40 postgraduates, and his team has obtained multiple international prizes, such as the Gold Medal at 47th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva (2019). He has delivered over 250 invited lectures nationally/internationally, e.g., the FDI World Oral Health Forums (2017 & 2021), FDI World Dental Congress (2016-2019, 2024 & 2025), IADR General Sessions (2010/2013), EuroPerio 8 (2015), Asia Pacific Dental Congress (2023), Asian Chief Dental Officers’ Meetings (2014 & 2022), Penn Periodontal Conference at University of Pennsylvania (2017), Dental Medicine Research Conference at Karolinska Institute (2017), and 11th Workshop of ARPA-Scientific Society Foundation (Germany 2016).
As a clinician scientist, Prof. Jin has published 300 journal papers & books/chapters with two patents filed, being the World’s Top 2% Scientists 2025 by Stanford University & top 1% scholars in Dentistry; and the Top Scholars by Expertise in Dentistry 2024 (0.5%) by ScholarGPS®.
