Cheung Tan-To

Anthony and Anne Cheung Professorship in Innovative and Minimally Invasive Surgery

Professor Cheung Tan-To is the Chief of the Division of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery within the Department of Surgery, Queen Mary Hospital, HKU-SZ Hospital, The University of Hong Kong, and the President of the Hong Kong Society of Hepatobiliary 2022-2024 and Vice President of College of Surgeons of Hong Kong.

 

Professor Cheung is ranked Clarivate Analytics Top 1% worldwide researcher by citations and he is a world-renowned leading expert in the field of laparoscopic liver resection for primary

liver cancer. He is the pioneer of minimally invasive surgery for Hepato-pancreato-biliary (HBP) Surgery and has achieved zero hospital mortality since the commencement of the programme. He published the results of laparoscopic hepatectomies at Queen Mary Hospital in various journals, including Annals of Surgery, Journal of Hepatology, British Journal of Surgery and many more. He has presented his work on laparoscopic liver resection in patient with cirrhosis in 135th American Surgical Association Annual meeting. The papers he published has been highly cited. He has completed two postgraduate doctoral degrees including the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 2018. His thesis was the “Application on Minimally invasive Hepatectomy for liver cancer.”

 

Professor Cheung has a lot of research collaborations with other centers internationally. He was the Founding Member of International Laparoscopic Liver Society and was elected as Advisory Board Member in 2019. He was Chairman of Radiology Committee of International Liver Transplant Society and was elected as Council Member of the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong. Professor Cheung is an active researcher with a successful grant record including principal investigator and co-investigator of various grants from University Grants Committee (UGC) Hong Kong and China with a total amount of more than $49 million. He was a recipient of the GB Ong Travelling Fellowship Award 2013 and James IV Travelling Fellowship Award 2017. He has authored more than 270 peer-reviewed articles and other publications and is frequently invited to deliver lectures internationally and to present in plenary sessions. He has mentored many trainees, including post- graduate degree and oversea academia.

 

His research in immunotherapy for management of Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) has won him one General Research Fund (GRF), one Theme Based Research Scheme (TRS) and one Collaborative Research Fund (CRF) from UGC in this area.
