The Hong Kong Jockey Club Professorship in Finance and Entrepreneurship
The Faculty of Business and Economics became The University of Hong Kong (HKU)’s tenth faculty when it was established in 2001. Rebranded as HKU Business School to mark its 20th Anniversary, the School is now on another stage of its development “to become a leading, globally impactful institution in business and economics education”.
As well as planning to relocate to an academic complex dedicated to HKU Business School at the Pokfield Campus, which will be completed in phases, it is the University’s most international faculty and has well-established strategic partnerships with world-renowned universities and corporate partners. It has also been expanding overseas and now has four centres outside of Hong Kong, with a new campus in development in Barcelona, Spain.
Professor Roni Michaely is The Hong Kong Jockey Club Professor in Finance and Entrepreneurship at HKU Business School, HKU. He is the Founding Managing Director of the HKU Tel-Aviv Innovation Hub and is co-leading the project in Barcelona as part of the School’s international expansion. Professor Michaely is also Co-Director of The HKU Jockey Club Enterprise Sustainability Global Research Institute, which was established by HKU Business School and funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust to create a world-class hub for best practices in sustainability.
Professor Michaely research interests are in the areas of empirical corporate finance, corporate governance, entrepreneurial finance, and fintech. In the past several years he has also focused on the key issues of finance and sustainability. His research addresses how informational and agency frictions in capital markets affect managers, investors, and information providers, including analysts and bloggers, decisions, output, and the influence on capital market efficiency. He has been recognised as one of the most prolific researchers in finance, with over 36,000 citations.
Professor Michaely is also a research member at the European Corporate Governance Institute (ECGI). He spent a significant portion of his career as The Rudd Family Professor of Finance at Cornell University and Cornell Tech. His teaching includes corporate finance and entrepreneurial finance for MBA, Executive MBA, DBA, and PhD students.
He has more than 80 academic publications to his name, and his research has appeared in scholarly journals such as the Journal of Finance, Review of Financial Studies, Journal of Financial Economics, Management Science, The Review of Finance, and Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis. His work has also been featured in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, the Economist, Bloomberg, BusinessWeek, Forbes, Money, and others.
Professor Michaely has delivered over 250 invited research talks, conference presentations, and keynote speeches worldwide, and is working with scholars across Asia, the US, and Europe, on corporate finance research.
His research has received numerous awards and honours. Recent accolades include the 2025 Western Finance Association Best Paper Award in Corporate Finance and dual Best Paper Awards from the Review of Finance in 2020 and 2024. He earned the 2024 Antitrust Writing Award and was recognised by the Financial Management Association and French Finance Association with Best Paper honours in 2023 and 2022 respectively. Other awards include the 2020 Review of Finance best paper award, the 2017 Distinguish research award of the Eastern Finance Association, and the 2005 Journal of Financial Economics Fama Prize for best paper.
Co-Founder of two startups, Professor Michaely currently serves on the board of Tipranks, and on the advisory board of several other companies. He was a Director of the Israeli Securities Authority (ISA) from 1998 to 2003 and was the Chairperson of Tachlit investment committee.
