The Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has been a key player in the global development of spine surgery. Since its inception more than 60 years ago, the Department has been at the forefront of innovation in technology development and surgical techniques. Each Department Chairperson has been deeply invested in advancing orthopaedics and spine care in Hong Kong and internationally.
This legacy is still evident today with Professor Jason P Y Cheung, currently serving as the Department Chairperson. As an internationally acclaimed academic spine surgeon, he has acquired a strong reputation for his research acumen and surgical expertise, being invited to numerous international talks and keynotes. In particular, his global impact can be seen through advancements in growth-friendly surgery for early onset scoliosis, genetics and epidemiology of spinal deformities, non-fusion surgery for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, and artificial intelligence in orthopaedic healthcare. His high-quality research and translational work have consistently been showcased in high-impact international journals. To date, he has published over 300 journal articles and has been recognized with over 60 international accolades.
Under Professor Cheung’s leadership, the spine division has maintained its reputation as a leading authority in spinal deformity. A graduate of the class of 2007 at HKU, he continues to give back to his alma mater as a dedicated teacher. He has reformed the Department’s teaching pedagogy by embracing modern technology such as 3D printing and virtual reality. He has also advanced his own learning through the years, obtaining his Master of Surgery in 2017, Postgraduate Diploma in Molecular and Diagnostic Pathology in 2018, Doctor of Medicine in 2019, and Master of Education in 2021.
Professor Cheung’s leadership extends beyond the University, taking on multiple roles as Chief of Service for Orthopaedics and Traumatology and Spine Centre Director at Gleneagles Hospital, honorary treasurer of the Hong Kong College of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Regional Chairperson Elect of AOSpine Asia Pacific, and Scientific Committee Chair of the Asia Pacific Spine Society. He is serving as editor for seven journals, three of which he is serving as the chief editor or senior board member.
