Li Shu Fan Medical Foundation Professorship in Gastroenterology

As obesity and digestive diseases become more common as a result of unhealthy lifestyles, an increasing number of Hong Kong people are suffering from various digestive diseases including gastroesophageal reflux, colorectal and gastrointestinal cancers, and liver disorders.


Professor Leung Wai-Keung is currently a Clinical Professor in the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology of the Department of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong (HKU). He is also the Assistant Dean (Platform Technology) of the LKS Faculty of Medicine. Professor Leung’s research areas cover both basic and clinical research in gastroenterology including early detection of gastrointestinal cancer by blood and stool biomarkers, application of novel gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures and clinical research on inflammatory bowel disease.


Currently the Director of Integrated Endoscopy Unit of Queen Mary Hospital, Professor Leung has significantly increased both the throughput and complexity of endoscopic procedures performed at the facility. Since joining HKU, he has been organising the University’s annual endoscopy course, which aims to transfer advanced endoscopic techniques to local doctors. He has received funding support from the Hong Kong SAR Government (including Research Grant Council, Health & Medical Research Fund and Innovation Technology Fund) as well as the National Institute of Health of the United States.


Professor Leung graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and also obtained his MD with commendation there. He joined the Department of Medicine at HKU in 2011.


Professor Leung was the immediate past President of the Hong Kong Inflammatory Bowel Disease Society and has been actively involved in many local and international professional societies. He was one of the co-authors in the Asian Pacific Consensus Statements/Guidelines on the management of Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, colorectal cancer screening and gastric cancer screening. He will also lead the Scientific Committee of the Asia Pacific Digestive Week in 2017. He is the Chairman of the Credential Subcommittee of the Licentiate Committee of the Hong Kong Medical Council and the Deputy Director of the Institutional Review Board of the University.


Professor Leung has published more than 190 peer-reviewed articles in leading medical journals including New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, Lancet Oncology, Gastroenterology and Gut. He is among the top 1% Scholars in Essential Science Indicators with an H-index of 55. He is currently serving on the editorial boards of six journals and was awarded the Top Quality Reviewer of Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics in 2011.


In recognition of his contributions to research excellence, he has won prizes and awards from the World Congress of Gastroenterology, Asia Pacific Digestive Week, and the European Helicobacter pylori Study Group. Professor Leung has delivered more than 80 lectures at local and international meetings.
