Kingboard Professorship in Advanced Dentistry

Professor Chu Chun-Hung is a Chair Professor and an Associate Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry at The University of Hong Kong (HKU). His leadership roles extend beyond Hong Kong, as he serves as the Chair of the FDI World Dental Federation Public Health Committee and the Vice President of the Asian-Oceanian Federation of Conservative Dentistry. He has previously held esteemed positions such as president of the Asia Academy of Preventive Dentistry, the South East Asia Association for Dental Education, and the Society of Preventive Dentistry of Hong Kong.


Professor Chu earned his Bachelor of Dental Surgery, Postgraduate Diploma in Dental Surgery, Master of Dental Surgery and Doctor of Philosophy from HKU. Through rigorous training and examinations, he became a diplomate of the American Board of General Dentistry, a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, a dental fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine and a fellow in Dental surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd). He practices as a specialist in Family Dentistry in Hong Kong. Before moving to the Faculty of Dentistry, HKU, he served as a full-time dental surgeon for 15 years at University Health Service, HKU and received the HKU 15-year Long Service Award.


With God's grace, Professor Chu has become a prolific contributor in academic fields, boasting a Google Scholar h-index of 80 with over 350 publications. He sits on the editorial boards of several major dental journals and reviews research grants from countries worldwide. As the principal investigator, he has received external grants worth approximately US$ 20 million in total.


As an educator, Professor Chu teaches dental students and supervises postgraduate students. Some of his students have become full professors or associate professors at universities, and some are listed among the Stanford/Elsevier Top 2% Scientists. His dedication to mentorship was recognised with the HKU Outstanding Research Student Supervisor Award.


Professor Chu was elected a fellow of the RCSEd Faculty of Dental Trainers for his commitment to dental education, a fellow of the Academy of Dental Materials for his achievements in scientific research, and a fellow of the International College of Dentists (ICD) for his dedication to community services. He is a Master of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) and received the prestigious AGD Lifelong Learning & Service Recognition Award.


Outside of his academic and professional roles, Professor Chu serves as a board director for Project Concern Hong Kong, a charity dedicated to helping those in need in Hong Kong. He also chairs the Dental Public Health Committee of the ICD Section XV, which serves disadvantaged communities in the region. His excellence in community service has been recognized with the HKU Knowledge Exchange Excellence Award.


Professor Chu humbly attributes his achievement to the unmerited grace of his Lord Jesus Christ and the selfless support of his loving family. He enjoys Bible study and, along with his beloved wife Shela and their two daughters, worships at the Alliance International Church in Hong Kong.
