Danny D B Ho Professorship in Family Medicine
Graduated from University of Edinburgh, Professor Wong received his Doctor of Medicine in 2007 and has extensive academic and clinical experience from the UK, Australia, Hong Kong and China. He is currently DB Ho Clinical Professor in Family Medicine and Chairperson at the Department of Family Medicine and Primary Care (FMPC), SClinMed, HKU. He holds concurrent appointments as Honorary Consultant at the Hospital Authority of Hong Kong and FM Clinical Head at Gleneages Hospital as well as Senior Reesarch Fellow at University of North Carolina, USA and Adjunct Professor at the University of New South Wales, Australia. He serves as the Chief of Department (2024-) and Chief of Service (2018-21) for Department of FMPC at the HKU-Shenzhen Hospital.
A well-recognised world leader in Family Medicine, he was commissioned by the Lancet on “Transformation of Primary Health Care in post-COVID era” (2024-26). Professor Wong’s work has centred around infectious diseases, preventing their transmission and improving access for vulnerable populations. His research in Hepatitis B virus (HBV) prevention and care significantly promoted universal HBV screening, advocated chronic hepatitis B (CHB) care in primary care, and changed the narrative about HBV among healthcare professionals in China. He is the principal architect of the first Primary Care Guideline on CHB Managment in China (2021) published by Chinese Medical Assocation. He is appointed on WHO Strategic and Technical Advisory Committee on HIV, viral hepatitis and sexually transmitted infections (2021-24) and has been temporary advisor for WHO West Pacific Office on a number of HIV/ sexual health guidelines.
His commitment to advancing healthcare globally led him to found WONCA Health Equity Special Interest Group in 2014 and Faculty of Travel Medicine, RCPS (UK); and to be conferred as Honorary Membership from the Faculty of Public Health (UK) in 2015. To continuously improve standards of care, he serves on the Advisory Committee on Primary Care Directory (2024-27), Advisory Group on Antibiotic Guidance Notes for Primary Care (2024-27), Advisory Council for AIDS (2019-26) and Council for AIDS Trust Fund (2022-25) for the Hong Kong SAR Government. He also commits to primary care nationally, through his current position as the Vice Chair of the General Practice Committee of Shenzhen Medical Association and on the Executive Committee of Cross Strait Medical Exchange Association, China; and, General Practice Branch of China Association for Promotion of International Exchange of Medical Care China.
